The first step in developing your psychic ability is to learn to use your five senses. Your sixth sense, or ability to receive or communicate messages from spirit or your divine self can only come once you have heightened your awareness by using your five senses. Once you have developed your senses your sixth sense will begin to open up and become more refined.

The five senes are:

  • Taste, the ability to use your taste buds to decipher the differences between the foods you eat.
  • Smell, the ability to use your nose to detect scents and fragrance.
  • Sight, the ability to use your eyes to see the world.
  • Sound, the ability to use your ears to hear noises and voices.
  • Touch, the ability to use your hands or body to feel texture and temperature.

    The sixth sense or psychic sense is the ability to feel and read energies. This sense is reliant on all other senses because energy can be in any form and the senses evoked while reading the energy can help you understand the messages being sent through that energy.

    Some simple exercises for developing your senses take only a few minutes. If you practice these daily or multiple times throughout the day you will reinforce your senses.

    Taste- when you are eating savor each bite and really ponder the different flavors and textures you experience.

    Smell- when you step outside to go to work, inhale deeply. Ponder what you smell. Make mental notes of all the scents you encounter.

    Sight- what do you see when you look around the room or when you look outside? Make mental notes of colors, animals and objects you encounter.

    Sound- what do you hear if you close your eyes? Do you hear the hum of a refrigerator, the furnace or a car motor? Do you hear birds chirping or flowing water?

    Touch- when you touch objects throughout the day notice their texture are they hard or soft? Or are they rough or smoothe? Make notes of the different textures you feel.

    By performing these simple exercises as much as possible you will heighten your awareness of the world around you. Each experience recorded in your mind builds on all the other recorded experinces and helps you tune into your senses. Once you have strengthend your senses and impoved your ability to see, taste, smell, hear and feel, you will find that your intuition or sixth sense will become stronger. For example, if you are sitting outside with your eyes closed you may be able to sense the presence of an animal as it approaches without seeing it. A picture of a bird may appear in your mind. When you open your eyes you may see a bird flying in the the sky or landing in a tree branch right next to you. Or, you may hear the sound of a car approaching in your mind and minutes later the car will come within a distance that you can actually hear the motor with your ears and then shortly pass by you.

    By learning to rely on your senses and strengthening your intuition, you will begin to learn to read energies and can more effectively communicate with spirit or the universe through meditation. We all have a natural ability, it's up to us to learn to use it. Like with anything else practice makes you more adept.
